About Tokyo Sightseeing Taxis

Sightseeing taxis are vehicles in which drivers not only operate the car but also provide guided commentary while visiting sightseeing spots.
With its wealth of tourist attractions, Tokyo—the capital of Japan—is one of the country’s leading destinations, drawing countless visitors from both inside and outside the country.

In 2012, to mark the 100th anniversary of taxis in Japan, the Tokyo Sightseeing Taxi Promotion Council was established to help promote tourism in the city. Comprised of tourism experts, institutions, organizations, and the taxi industry, the council launched the Tokyo Sightseeing Taxi Driver Certification System.

The goal of this system is to ensure a safe and reliable service by training drivers with strong tourism knowledge who can provide a high-quality level of hospitality. The first certification program produced 100 certified drivers, and today, more than 1,600 are active.

About TSTiE Drivers

To address the growing and increasingly diverse needs of inbound tourists, the training and certification system for TSTiE Drivers, who can provide sightseeing guidance in English, was established in 2015.

Later, to encourage the use of multilingual sightseeing taxis in Tokyo, the Regional Interpreting Guide certification system was launched in fiscal year 2016. Drivers who register for and complete the training conducted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government are now eligible to provide paid interpreting and guiding services within Tokyo.
As the training content is equivalent, the association does not conduct its own program. Instead, it certifies drivers who meet the following requirements as TSTiE Drivers.
